I saw Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy last night (NO SPOILERS)
I loved the trailer, so I was really looking forward to seeing it and I finally did last night with a movie group I'm in. Before going in though, I heard that it was a really SLOW movie. So at that point, I was hoping I'd be able to stay awake through the full 2+ hours.
First thing, it IS a slow movie. Don't expect to see dozens of British agents engaged in brutal gun battles with Russian spies. BUT it is an engaging movie. Gary Oldman is brilliant as George Smiley, the retired agent tasked with finding the Russian mole. He has a couple great monologues that will surely get him nominated for Best Actor. The whole cast is very solid, though my only complaint is that the characters who play the potential mole don't have a whole lot to say. That could be seen as a cop out because obviously if you don't hear from the suspects and thusly find out their motives and/or character flaws, it's hard to figure out which one is the mole. You mainly follow Oldman and his team as they investigate leads outside the British Intelligence building. So in a way, it plays out like a 2 hour Law and Order episode.
Overall, it is a very good movie. When I found out it was a slow movie I expected to be bored, but I wasn't. I'll definitely see it again when it comes out on On-Demand and DVD and try to see what I missed the first time around.
I would definitely reccomend it if you like mystery and old school spy movies, NOT the current shoot-em-up Daniel Craig/James Bond movies. If you want to see great acting from a great actor, definitely see this movie.
