They should've gone with the judge's ex-wife. That would've been slightly less obvious.

That seemed odd to me, but, because she was so cool and businesslike, it seemed unlikely she'd do something as unprofessional as committing such an awful crime.

She had no other purpose in that scene. I saw more interesting motivation for the judge's ex-wife, who could have exacted revenge for the failure of their marriage by using his sexual proclivities against him.
