I always thought Hot Tuna was the real core of the Jefferson Airplane. Papa John was such a unique musician in both the Airplane and Hot Tuna...he just gave both bands an edge.
You might want to check out a post in the Music Appreciation forum of Jorma calling Papa John up on stage for a great duet...it was the 1st time they had played in about 10 years...and probably the last. Papa John was almost 70 and looked pretty frail...but he still had the chops. They do an inspired version of "Never Happen No More". http://www.democraticunderground.com/103479

My favorite HT concert took place in a hockey rink. The sound bounced off the walls that night!
