Probably something simple like a rubber band. Gorp Feb 2013 #11
Could be. Maybe I wasn't looking closely enough Orrex Feb 2013 #12
Agreed. There's no rubber band in the picture, but they might have used rubber cement. Gorp Feb 2013 #13
Haven't tried the one with sharpies and ceramic dishes Lars39 Feb 2013 #2

The one with the two ladders would cost you over $100. You could buy a serviceable and less slapdash-looking shelf for that!

... as a temporary work surface for a power miter saw. I fold it into a "M" shape and use a board from a computer work station I built in the mid 80's as the surface. It has 2x2s on the ends (where the screws held it in place) that just happen to fit neatly over the rungs of the ladder. It's very stable, portable, and conveniently temporary.

I doubt I would dedicate two step ladders to a shelving unit, but it does have the advantage of being somewhat adjustable and quick to re-configure. The idea I really liked was using a book-end as a shelf, giving the illusion that the books are just floating up against the wall. That's a neat trick.

I couldn't understand how they got the down-facing cover to stay closed, though. The pic makes it look as though it's stuck to the bookend shelf by magic.

The first pic seemed to show the lower cover magically holding to the underside of the bookend.

Still a neat trick in any case!

but from what I understand, the sharpies need to be oil-based for it to work.

I was doing something like that on cabinets today, using satin lacquer and Mohawk's Finisher's Toning glazes.

Different colors though...

Hey,
Some of those were cool. I didn't even know they made chalkboard paint. I have a whole lot of frames sitting around, I think I will have to try that.

Peace
