Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI have a cough. It is a pretty dry one. Related to a cold. But dam does it hurt my trachea
when I cough. Does anyone have any homemade elixir that will help? I think I will end up making lipton's chicken soup.

If you have tea and honey and lemon, I think it would be kinder to your trachea than chicken soup.
Maybe soup then the tea?
Take care!

(34,136 posts)If there is any congestion, I like ginger ale and limeade or lemonade mixed half & half. Not as soothing to the throat, but it helps break up the phlegm.

(115,732 posts)I've had bronchitis for 3 weeks now, coughing constantly, laryngitis from the cough, it's awful. The tea/honey/lemon juice is soothing but the cough syrup with codeine is better because it makes me stop coughing long enough to get some sleep. For awhile I was coughing so hard I thought I'd cracked a rib. It's getting a little better now, which is good because I've used up almost a whole jar of honey. I think I've drunk at least a gallon of tea in the last couple of weeks. It does make your throat feel better. Another thing you can do is boil water, pour it in a bowl, and lean over it with a towel over your head and breathe in the warm water vapor for 5-10 minutes. This seems to help loosen the cough.

(11,065 posts)help me a lot. You need to try keeping your mouth and throat moist. Actually, straight honey or a blob of peanut butter often works well for me. But if the soreness is related to a virus you might be better off using that numbing throat spray stuff... Chloraseptic. Even the cherry flavored tastes like crap, but it really works great in numbing the throat so you don't get that pain or sandpaper feeling. It doesn't last very long though, but you can pretty much use it as needed. It really saved my painfully sore throat when I had the flu when nothing else did.
Hope you feel better soon!

(716 posts)It's somewhat bitter, so adding a little honey is generally recommended. Drink it as hot as you can stand it. If your sinuses are packed, go a little heavy on the peppermint.
