I've never eaten it (to the best of my knowledge). But is it really so awful, or is it just a cultural
thing? In the US we're not in the habit of eating it, just like we're not in the habit of eating monkeys, which
I understand they do in some countries.

(58,662 posts)Absolutely no medical or nutritional reason not to eat horse.
It reminds me of the fooferaw many years ago in Southern California when people starting losing pets. It was right after Vietnam and many refugees had been expatriated to the states. Of course, the racists in the area started screaming "They're eating our cats and dogs!"
We treat horses more like pets than the work animals they used to be. And we tend to treat our pets too much like people.

(4,056 posts)My Chinese and Vietnamese friends will eat animals we think of as pets or family members, and Americans are appalled. Hindu friends won't eat beef, cows wander India while the poor are hungry, and Americans are appalled.
As a vegetarian, I believe if you consider one animal to be a food source, then they all can be so. I'm just happy I live in the 21st century where I can eat my boutique diet of high-end agriculture, whereas humans in an earlier era could not be so choosy! We're here cuz our ancestors ate whatever was around them, including insects, rodents and yes, even horses.

(24,300 posts)but it also doesn't taste as good as beef or pork, in my opinion.
