Freshman: "My favorite song of yours is 'New York State of Mind;' could I play it with you?"
Joel. "Sure. What key do you play it in?"
Kid: "What key do you want it in?"

Theodore Bikel is someone whom most of you have probably never heard of. He was born in 1924 in Vienna. He is an actor, folk singer, stage presence, and LOTS of "etc." He did a film with Humphrey Bogart, a folk festival with Bob Dylan, a thousand different TV shows (Dynasty, Law and Order) and films (he was the Russian sub captain in "The Russians Are Coming" and stage shows (the lead in Fiddler On The Roof). He speaks twice as many languages as I do, and I speak nine. He likes to say "I speak 35 languages and 19 of them are Yiddish." A mutual friend had introduced us, and told him that I wanted to play with him just once some day.
One New Year's Eve, after we had rung in the New Year, he came up to me and said "Get your guitar. We are going to find a room somewhere and sing Russian songs!" So I got my guitar, we left the main celebration, and for almost an hour, I was doing duets of old Russian folk songs with this living legend in a gig that could probably have sold out Carnegie Hall. The only people who heard it were my wife, who knew what was going on, and two local janitors (we were in Charleston, SC), who hadn't the faintest idea who Theo is. One of them said, "I don't know what y'all are singing, but it sounds pretty cool."
It was pretty cool, alright.
What a wonderful experience. Your friend sounds fascinating! Wow, nine languages is incredible but 18!

Theodor Bikel is an immensely talented man.

(54,369 posts)Four years ago, he could still belt out "If I Were A Rich Man" as if he were in the middle of a 2 years Broadway run of "Fiddler." He'll be joining the other two of my four "amazing elderly" friends in the "90-something" category. Helen Thomas and Stan Lee are already there. He took a heavy emotional blow when Tamara died suddenly, but he keeps himself occupied with work--not a given at 90.
