DU Album of the Day: Portishead 'Dummy'

Before Adele
Before Duffy
Before Amy Winehouse
Before a host of other Brit songstresses with that grovelly 'I smoke too much' voice there was Beth Gibbons, lead singer of the band Portishead.

Now I do realize that before Beth there was plenty of other British songstresses with that same "I'm so bad just do me" voices but I just love Portishead. 'Dummy' is one of those albums you can just queue up on the CD/MP3 player and snuggle up with the one you love and get down to some *****censored*****.

'Dummy' is such an amazing, sensual album and it was one that made the Rolling Stone Magazine list of top 500 albums of all time (#419).

My favorite song is tied between two amazing songs - Numb and Glory Box

So, queue up those players, light the candles, relax, maybe take a hot bubble bath or . Enjoy today's DU album of the day!

If I can extrapolate from the number of responses to my Monday post. Maybe this feature should be an "Album of the Week"?

I have two or three Portishead songs in rotation on my work computer. For me, that's the best way to listen to music like this. I couldn't listen, intently, to the entire album, like I do to my Yes, Beatles & Zeppelin albums, because I would probably go to sleep. (And I don't mean that as an insult, I love music like this. I'm - just - so - tired!)

A really unique sound for their time. This album gets a lot of playtime on my ipod.

I've also always loved the opening lines to the review of it on Allmusic.

'Portishead's album debut is a brilliant, surprisingly natural synthesis of claustrophobic spy soundtracks, dark breakbeats inspired by frontman Geoff Barrow's love of hip-hop, and a vocalist (Beth Gibbons) in the classic confessional singer/songwriter mold.'

I don't think I've ever heard an album or a band's sound summed up so nicely in so few words.

And by confused, I mean, bands that get great press that I don't bother listening to.
