The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWhat addictions have you overcome and for how long. I've been quit smoking for 3.5 years.
I did it using Champix and then herbal cigarettes. Now when I see somebody smoking I think of those horrid herbal smokes and feel revultion. I just quit drinking last June. So far so good. I never think about it. I'm on meds for ptsd so I'm sure this helps me with my two quits. I never thought I could give up cigarettes but it went really well. And drinking I'd quit before.

(12,359 posts)Woke up feeling lousy, went downstairs for a smoke, and almost vomited. I finally said to myself, "If this is how your body is reacting, why are you doing this to yourself?" I didn't take any meds, but had been practicing harm reduction techniques for a few years. My body finally told me that it was time.
Unfortunately, the addiction that replaced smoking I've also quit: working out.

I better get on the ball and quit too.
Neither of us has ever smoked again.

(118,656 posts)people answers. What would happen if Sunday LOLcats was no longer in the lounge? But in the pet's forum? Of course I would go to the Addictions and recouvery group if I was going to go into more detail about the issue but this was really a survey. I'm not trying to go against the grain here. I just think a little bit of mixing it up topicwise makes it more interesting. I posted 4 OPs in the lounge in a row to try and get this place moving. But thanks for the suggestion.

(4,056 posts)I used to think I had an addictive personality, but as I aged, I realized my cravings were not that strong, and a lot of what I thought I couldn't do without was merely consumed from habit or boredom. I don't crave junk food, and long ago gave up drugs (only used for recreation when we went to clubs, or to get up in the morning and go to work AFTER the clubbing). The past couple weeks, I decided to see if I could live without alcohol, and I don't miss it at all.
But...and this is one big but!...all my ability to leave behind these substances is totally negated by my obsession and addiction to...COFFEE. I seriously would give up food, sex, and even a few of my friends before I'd let anyone take away my cafe latte.

(28,394 posts)Long time ago! I also quit drinking coffee a couple of years ago. No special reason... I switched to decaf, then just stopped drinking it entirely.
I have tried repeatedly to cut down on sugar. Sometimes I'm successful for months, but then I end up eating sweets again. They are just too hard to resist.

(27,677 posts)I like the way Craig Ferguson talks about quitting smoking:
I used to smoke. I tried to quit many times. I tried everything. Hypnosis, aversion therapy, visualization. I finally realized the trick. This is trick. It will work every time: Stop putting cigarettes in my mouth and lighting them! I know! That's what it is. You go, 'Oh, no, I really want cigarette!' That's what it feels like! And then when you really want the cigarette, you don't have it! 'You can't write a book about that.' Exactly!

(1,078 posts)and last week's study that said it had no effect pissed me off. I know several people who used it to quit smoking. I don't know how I'd gotten through it w/o the gum.
I credit the gum for my successful "quitting", almost 10 years ago.

(17,045 posts)I quit smoking 13 years ago.
Ans sex! I kind of love sex addiction because it, like food addiction, challenges the idea that if you have an addiction you have to abstain totally. I havent quit having sex, but Ive quit measuring my value as a person based on whether I can make every person I meet want to have sex with me. I pretty much spent ages 13 - 23 using sex in a very unhealthy way - which was sometimes fun, but most often painful and destructive. I actually couldn't possibly tell you how many people I slept with or remember all their names.

(4,886 posts)I sorta took to many valiums and drank a few beers and ended up taking 22 10 mg pills and drank a bunch more beer and had to go to the hospital.
No, I wasnt trying to off myself, I just liked the feeling I was getting.
I did have the presence of mind to call my doc and tell him what I had done.
Pretty stupid, and that was my last beer ever.
