I "only" saw eight patients this morning, but what a bag of trouble they all brought in with them. Two calls to the EMT's for transport to the hospital, 3 EKG's, a patient having an acute generalized seizure in the foyer, a possible venous thrombus, and a brand-new diagnosis of Diabetes.
Still trying to catch my breath...

Now I have enough stuff to last forever.
But Jeff insisted on buying me another great looking pair of shoes this morning.

(10,237 posts)if you get sick of your job could you join congress so the country could get working together again ?
A friend of mine worked the ER at San Francisco General in the summer of 1967 --the stories he tells are frightening but your job sounds just as hard.

(66,349 posts)this chaotic. This was a once in a while thing. But this sort of thing happens every day, all day at Emergency Rooms. I don't think I could hack emergency medicine.
And the old 'treat-'em-and-street-'em" policy that ED's have doesn't mean they won't see the patient again. I had a new patient the other day who had been seen at the local ED four times in one day. Trying to scam narcotics off them, etc. They finally had to have security escort her off the premises, and threaten her with trespassing if she returned.
I was in twice before they realized I was flamingly hyperthyroid. (Oh, everyone has ectopics, you'll just have to live with it.)
That said, both times people were there getting over some sort of addition binges, and more out of it than I would have thought possible. Like the snake pit.

I would have thought a reasonably careful history and physical exam would have caught the hyperthyroid. Somebody must have been overworked...
Every third beat or so was a pac or pvc (I don't know which.) It was just crazy, I could hardly walk ("You got in here, didn't you?" , which was probably partly that and probably weakness from the thyroid getting the muscles, not to mention the breathing muscles.
I contemplated instead of leaving lying on the floor of the waiting room until someone did something, but i figured they'd have me arrested
Fortunately the second time I was solidly in afib, which ERs take seriously, and that different doctor did a thyroid test.
