I saw that season 1 is now on amazon prime. Is the show worth watching at all? I think I watched the first episode of it a few years back, but it was on my D&D night, so forgot to watch it more often than not and never DVR'd it.

(46,705 posts)I think I hit my cheesy limit with Being Human, Defiance and Revolution.

(56,828 posts)Being Human or Defiance.
My TV is Sunday nights Walking Dead/Game of Thrones/Falling Skies at 9pm. And, Once Upon A Time at 8pm
Monday nights, I've been watching Revolution. I have to catch up on Lost Girl, but Season 3 hasn't really interested me so far.
And, during the week, I try to catch Modern Family & Big Bang Theory when they're new. But, don't really watch too much else, and I'm still a few episodes behind on Modern Family.
Baitball Blogger
(46,705 posts)I thought they weren't going to resume it.
Lost Girl is "too cool" for me. Reminds me of a punk version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Shame on me, but I didn't get into Modern Family either. I think it's because I OD'd on the sitcoms.
NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)But, that's on for 10 weeks in the summer (10 episodes)... then, I have Walking Dead in the Fall & Winter (two 8 week seasons, 16 episodes total) and then Game of Thrones in the Spring (10 episodes). So, my Sundays at 9pm are full with 3 shows for 36 weeks of the year.

(17,742 posts)so why aren't you watching The Borgias then?
NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)Never saw it - is that Showtime? We normally don't have Showtime, but I see that it's on amazon prime now.

(17,742 posts)It started at the same time that GoT did, and I've been amazed at the parallels, and I think you would enjoy it. I can't help but think that GRRM was influenced by the story (history).

(51,122 posts)If you are into D&D, you will appreciate the wandering monsters aspect.
definitely into D&D. I think Grimm is associated with Joss Whedon, no? Whedon's a big D&D geek, if I recall.

(50,566 posts)Every show someone or several people turn/s into some creepy monstery thing of European fairytale origin. There's a lot of gore, and the main character police guy, the monster-fighting "Grimm," (who is very cute, by the way) fights it off with his cohorts.
It's filmed in Portland, Ore., which makes it a bit more interesting to me because I live there.
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)but the series as a whole has long story arc in addition to the weekly tale. We like it. It is a little cheesy but I love cheese.
NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)A lot of Buffy was her fighting the monster of the week, but there was usually an over-arching theme each season and at least a few episodes devoted to that theme, as well as several mentions or inter-related monsters.
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)So it would be hard for Grimm to match them. But after seeing the developing story of the royals (I won't get into more detail so as not so spoil) I'm getting more and more sucked into the show. Last night was the season finale and now I'm left wanting the next season to hurry up and arrive.
I started watching from the beginning because my daughter wanted to watch it and it was entertaining enough that I didn't mind. Now I actively look forward to each week's episode. It's often pretty funny and there's pretty good action and the CGI is kinda over the top but I can overlook that because it's still fun.

(322 posts)Kinds of creatures to say the least.
Not as serious as Angel, but a little more "grown up" than Buffy.
Both of which I enjoyed and still catch Angel on TNT in the early am if I am awake.

(8,217 posts)I like the characters, and it is a whole lot of repetative stories which connect to a larger story line.
Which is standard fare as is.
My favorite character in it is the Clock Repairman who is one of the more dangerous creatures in that particular world.

I enjoy watching it so does In_The_Wind.
Of course if you don't get into horror/fantasy it may not be to your liking.

(50,130 posts)But I watch Grimm with delight, as it seems to spoof many things. Of course it is set in my home town, so that makes it extra fun. The actors regularly appear on local news features in Portland, giving local viewers a feeling of being "insiders" into the show and the production.
Jeff R
(322 posts)Until you mentioned it I forgot it is filmed in Portland.
I recall seeing the actors on local television out your way.
Was an over the road driver for many years spent my down time either at Jubitz or in Troutdale depending on which end of town I was in.
AmyDeLune
(1,846 posts)not only is it filmed in my hometown of Portland, OR, it's also set here as well. The first season is mostly "creature of the week" with the seeding of the longer story arcs which are more prevalent in season two.
The basic premise is that the animal creatures from various fairy tales, myths, and legends are in fact a group of creatures called Wessen (pronounced vessen, you'll get sort of a german pronunciation primer just from watching the show) who look human unless they deliberately, or under extreme stress, reveal their true forms. A Grimm is a human who can see a Wessen's true form when the Wessen doesn't intend to be seen.
The first season is the title character, a Portland police detective, coming into his abilities unexpectedly and having to learn about and adjust to them.
It's worth watching if you have the free time, the new time for new episodes is Tuesday at 10:00 PM though there won't be any new episodes until the fall.

(9,465 posts)But then I'm into Science Fiction and weird, which isn't everyone's cuppa. I like that the "monsters" are complex half-humans - some evil, some good, most a mixture - unlike the usual clear-cut battle lines for a cheesy series. And that vegetarian werewolf is a delight.
That said, I could have done without the episode of the eye-ball eating vessen. That one was truly disturbing. And really, really disgusting.

(8,217 posts)That particular episode made me have sympathy pains.
As a guy, I hope they do not create another wessen that would cause a guy to have another type of sympathy pains.
I did feel for the cows however...
FloridaJudy
(9,465 posts)They did die in a good cause, though: saving an endangered and mostly benign species from extinction. Still, it did seem rather wasteful, since they only needed a part of the cow that usually winds up in the trash anyway. I wondered why they didn't simply befriend a kindly butcher: surely there are some decent Wessen (thanks for informing me of how that's spelled) butchers around. It seems an obvious career for one who needs animal flesh to survive, and would prefer to stay under the radar by obtaining it legally.
Xyzse
(8,217 posts)As for the spelling, someone else pointed that out here, so if I'm wrong, blame them.
NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)a lot of good responses on here.
I'll have to watch the first several episodes when I have time.
FloridaJudy
(9,465 posts)That is one of the quirkier sets around. Grimm always seems at a loss to explain the weird shit she collected - medieval weaponry, exotic herbs, rare books - to those not in on the secret. Me? I would have said "Oh yeah. My aunt was a dedicated member of the Society for Creative Anachronisms". End of awkwardness.
Spike89
(1,569 posts)However, I've hardly ever spotted her while watching it--she used to post screen captures where she appeared (usually the back of her head, or a blurry shape far in the background). My wife and I watch it regularly, not because of my cousin, or because we're both originally from Portland, but because it is fun.
The basically revamped the series after the first year to make the stories a bit darker and complex and to emphasize the longer arcs (the royals) much more. The first year was OK, but stand-alone cop/monster stories got stale. Since the revamp, the entire backstory is much more interesting and thus the story arcs are stronger, it has also lessened the reliance on monster-of-the-week stories.

(50,130 posts)Remember, they said at the end of this season that someone would not live through the zombie attack, and Nick was just turned into a zombie. Poor Rosalie has her work cut out for her!

Rosalie rocks..she and Monroe really make that show work.

(9,465 posts)You just might end up being right. Plus, it seems to have taken forever for Nick to have spotted that Captain Renard was wessen (Come on! Wasn't his last name a give-away?), so his powers aren't infallible.
