I was just reading over a new patient's past medical history and intake form.

There's a check-box for coffee. 'Yes' if you drink it; 'No' if you don't. Pretty simple.

She checked yes, and then wrote down her order: Venti Americano.

Okaaaaaay...

Didn't really need that level of specificity, but...

It's been one of those days...

Really, laughing, out loud. Seems like the right place to be reading this.

Do I drink coffee? "Yes. I drink a Venti Americano every day" (That's more like 3-5 cups of coffee as opposed to 1.)

It's hot water and shots of espresso...a bit north of 300mg of caffeine. (According to Starbucks...I estimate that may be low by as much as 50%)

Unless it correlates to a patient complaint like anxiety or insomnia.

It was the naming of it that I found amusing.

I guess I have a problem.

Though a DNA test shows I'm a fast caffeine metabolizer.

There is evidence to suggest that coffee consumption may help prevent Diabetes Mellitus.

So go crazy!...

But not "3 or 4 pots a day" crazy...

If you told me, I'm sorry for forgetting...

I once had a Russian lady as a patient. Very sweet. Didn't speak a word of English, and my Russian is pretty sketchy beyond salutations and pleasantries. Her daughter interpreted for us.

I told the patient I wanted to evaluate her for possible congestive heart failure with an EKG. Without another word, she whipped off her blouse! Business-like; quick-march, which I guess is the Russian style.

I laughed and said: "No, no, no! the techs will take you down to the procedure room and do it there!"

She laughed too, after her daughter had translated, and put her blouse back on without a hint of embarrassment.

This job introduces one to so many interesting people.

I am a surgical nurse for an Opthalmology group. I may or may not have told you, some people know here on DU.

I'll say it was a first to have someone disrobe for a refraction! LOL!

Fun times at work!

So medicine seemed to be a logical choice for a career.

But I didn't want to go into medicine just because my Dad did. So I went in another direction.

I spent a number of unproductive, unfulfilling years trying other things.

I came back to medicine almost by accident. And now I'm a PA...

Life is weird sometimes...
