But they do flock with Redpoles sometimes.
I used to sit for hours by a large window close to my woodstove and watch the feeders, a bird guide book close at hand.
Shoveled all around the feeders after every snowfall for my "ground-feeders". The other birds knock plenty on the ground for them.

(46,436 posts)We have two good-sized feeders and we'd have to fill them every couple of days or so. It was insane. They love the cracked sunflower seeds.

Since then the number of birds has dropped quite a bit.
Some blame it on the spraying hydro has done to discourage foliage growth.
The first winter I was there - 2007-2008 and the following winter 2008-2009 I had plenty of birds, all sorts of different ones. Loaded my feeders 2-3 times a day.
Had lots of Pine and Evening Grosbeaks, sparrows, redpolls, pine siskins, American Gold Finches, nuthatches, chickadees, Blue Jays, grackles, Mourning Doves, Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers (hanging suet packs) and some others that didn't stay long enough for me to identify them.
OH - ONCE I saw a red cardinal - that was a pleasant surprise.
Not at the feeders, I saw Robins, Flickers, Crows, Ravens, Hawks; and once, an Eagle.
Last winter, hardly any birds at all - sometimes a load would last for 2 days or more . .
Hopefully my new place will have more birdies
I'll work on it.

It's not really a century bloomer -- it blooms once after 10 - 30 years. And then dies.
