"Madonna of the Mills" follows the story of a Brooklyn woman on a quest to save puppy mill breeder dogs from slaughter by, of all people, Mennonite Amish farmers who operate massive puppy mills (500-600 dogs) with no regard for the health or safety of the dogs.
Check out how they "debark" the dogs. They shove a pipe down their throats smashing their vocal chords in order to not alert others to the puppy mills existence.
In one story a Berks County, PA breeder and his brother took 80 of the dogs out behind the shed and shot them, then buried them in a mass grave because THEY HAD FLEAS.
This documentary changed how I view these neanderthal, 19th century wack jobs.

(5,604 posts)Our laws do a poor job preventing puppy mills. Just like banksters; the perps need prison time, not fines or bans. My shepherd was rescued from a puppy mill, and thankfully she turned out to be a wonderful, and not emotionally or physically damaged dog. Please consider adopting a rescued dog, and please do anything you can in your area help stop this brutality.

(34,658 posts)When I heard that the Amish ran some of the worst puppy mills for Leonbergers (my favorite breed) couldn't believe it either.
I'll stick to buying inanimate objects from the Amish.
