(55,476 posts)Pure J-Pop mirth
And at the same time Jellyfish's Andy Sturmer writes a lot of their music
So it's really interesting to see the influence at work
You hear how the influence went from Beatles to 70s era J-pop, throw in some punk and early 90s Psychedelia and Paisley Underground

(13,770 posts)But the Area 88 TV Series is up there in my book. Who doesn't love a techno remix of Bach's Little Fugue in G?
(BTW, this series could do with a Live Action adaptation. Think Top Gun with actual humanity.
And Black Lagoon. If Quentin Tarantino ever did an anime series, this is pretty damn close to what you'd get.

(6,154 posts)A sadder film is hard to find. This music still brings tears to my eyes. Sadly I can't find a version without just the music.

I have watched some Anime, but I particularly enjoy JRPG's and J-SHMUPS and then the Anime spin-offs from these.
The piano music collections from the Final Fantasy series are superb. Here is one such example:
One of the best SHMUPS series I know that includes some amazing music is the TOUHOU series. Here are a few examples of the artists featured:

(2,738 posts)And Akino Arai has an amazing career of wonderful music.
I listen to her albums, and am still impressed with how fresh the production sounds.
Hiro no Tsuki is perhaps one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.
Bongo Prophet
(2,738 posts)A series that most either love or see as shallow - ("Nothing happens! Too much cuteness!"
- it is rich with themes of friendship, loyalty, and cherishing time with others. And lots of understated irony, as well as the OTT humor. How do they write such good songs when they are always having tea and fancy desserts instead of practicing?
A taste of Afternoon Tea Time:
Songs about food.
Appreciation for a sibling:
Or a friend (the sentiment and harmony here get me every time...)
My Love is a Stapler - I listen to a lot of ambient, experimental and often comlex music, but love a well constructed, simple pop song.
And Youko Hisaka has such a great voice...
An interesting thing about their opening and ending songs - their openings are clearly them at the time of the story, while the ending songs are of their "future" selves. Another way of looking at this - the high school days are told in present tense, but really are nostalgic memories of same, while the end credits are their more "current" selves. Never spelled out, but it gives an interesting perpective, I think, on the themes presented in the series. Their "origin story"...
The seiyu (voice actors) even learned their characters' respective instruments to the point of being able to play a few songs live. Youko going so far as to play left handed bass. Pretty impressive, I think - far from "perfect" of course, but... that is sooo not the point, you know? Their love of their characters comes through, very emotional.
