The THIRD book though, kicked some serious ass.

Maybe they will combine the two books.

I am plowing through the fifth book now...

They should be combining the books, not breaking them up!

I don't want another "Carnivale" butchery on our hands if the
series gets cancelled.

I don't think I'd be able to live.

Book Three has been my favorite so far BECAUSE so much happened.
Book Two was kind of aimless. Just the characters wandering around.
I agree with this snip from a review on Amazon:

"Martin begins to create the framework for where he wants the rest of the series to go in A Clash of Kings. There is plenty of action, but there is also a lot of important plot development that will eventually pay off (if not in this book then in one of the later ones). "

and, I think they already skipped over a lot with A Game of Thrones TV for 9 1/2 hours over 10 episodes vs the book. I'm guessing they'll also toss in a bit of A Feast for Crows into Season 4 as well and then combine books 4 and 5 into Seasons 5 and 6.

Not to mention (swipe for spoilers)
[font color=white]The deaths of Balon Greyjoy and Renly Baratheon - two of the five kings; Theon capturing Winterfell and killing the two Stark Boys , plus the subsequent sacking of Winterfell by Ramsay Snow(Bolton); Jon killing Halfhand and meeting Ygritte; however, I'll give you that not a lot of action occurs with Dany, though we do get to meet Strong Belwas and Arstan Whitebeard.
