I have a collection of hot sauces at home. Some contain habanero, others contain bhut jolokia, one or two contain the dreaded Trinidad scorpion chili, and one of the habanero sauces is further infused with pure capsacin extract. (Ouch!)
In addition, this was my Atomic Wings Challenge at the Quaker Steak & Lube at Plano, TX last night:
I made it through all five wings without reaching for anything to drink, but it was an ordeal. I was shaking by the end of the fifth wing and in dire need of napkins. They offer you disposable gloves to wear while handling the wings, so that was a big plus.
Your turn - what are your experiences with hot 'n spicy food?

(12,132 posts)there is a pretty sizable area of Asian shops and I love shopping in there - one of my favorite things is bamboo shoots packed in chili oil that I use in various stir-fries. I doubt they are anywhere near as hot as some of the exotic things y'all are discussing but I love 'em. I try not to go too much hotter than fresh jalapeños or maybe a little bit of habanero...I learned most of my love for jalapeños growing up in Dallas. Tex-Mex is probably my favorite overall class of food. That and BBQ beef brisket.

I love spicy foods and these wings were some of the tastiest that I've ever had, but
when I was done with one of them. my mouth was on fire and I was pretty sure that
I was never ever going to try to eat another one.
.
Until about 5 minutes later... when I woujld be helplessly DRAWN back to that pan
to repeat the process -- over and over and over and over again.

It's one of the recipes I most regret not getting while I had the chance.

(17,101 posts)but I want to taste more than just HEAT. I like a flavourful blend, so that usually means less heat in the chilies that you described, but more ingredients - such as a spicy Thai curry.

(10,237 posts)if you can finish it you get it free ( so they can sell you three beers to wash it away )
I love spicy food all the time if it isn't spicy to hide the fact that it's bad .

(56,582 posts)Nom. So nom. But it makes sweat bead on my forehead.
My Indian friends eat this without even noticing the heat, but then again they can't eat horseradish without nearly passing out.

(21,020 posts)yes, that's what I am.
I grew up on bland food.
Not to mention that the least amount of hot pepper or whatever causes mouth sores/burn spots.
Even small amounts are painful.
Years ago I used to watch my second hubby and his dad happily noshing on hotter than hell red peppers, their faces turning beet red, water streaming from their eyes and noses, and sweat breaking on their brows.
I can't even imagine how anyone could find that enjoyable.

(11,794 posts)Sriracha and Tapatio are normal condiments on our food. We use 'em like people use ketchup. Whenever I go to Latin America, I bring back the hottest chili sauce I can find.

(23,340 posts)Also, just hot isn't interesting by itself. It is the flavor of the hot that is important.
I like medium hot, usually with some smoky qualities to it.
