Cashier to customer ratio of approximately 1:25. Oh, and the "15 items or less" rule is completely ignored in the express checkout, I often see people with entire bulging cart loads. There is always, however, the convenience of the self-checkout, where one attendant tries to keep up with roughly 15 lanes - woe be upon you if you have a problem and need assistance.

... just doesn't flip my flapjacks.
Unfortunately, a lot of my shopping is early morning, and at many places, Meijer and Kroger among them, they have only self-checkout open. It sucks.
