During the 50's thru the 70's, American car makers peddled bullshit.

"Our car makes you sexy!"
"Our car makes you glamorous!"
Etc...

It just didn't dawn on them that people wanted economical ways to get from point A to point B, safely.

8. Detroit's large cars were marketed poorly. The small cars were poorly built and designed.

would constitute "poor marketing". American Motors tried to market smaller, more fuel-efficient cars, but their designs often left something to be desired. The Vega morphed into the Monza which morphed into the Chevette, which morphed into the Sprint, which was a really high fuel efficient car (up to 50mpg) that was actually made by Suzuki.
