I have heard that in Italy and Sicily, people keep cats as early earthquake warning systems. There have also been cases of kitties warning their owners of fires.

Several years ago, just before it was time for me to get up for work as I usually do, my cat was sleeping with me--all of a sudden, she woke up, jumped over me across the bed and got up in the window, pawing at it: "I want out NOW!!!" I pushed myself out of bed, slid the window open, and she went out like a shot! She's never been a slow-poke, but I had never seen her move so fast! I noticed a little dangly thing next to the window swinging gently, and thought it was a bit curious, but didn't think too much more of it. I went ahead and showered and dressed, went in to eat and turned on the tv news. First thing I saw on it was about a mild earthquake, about 200 miles away, that had shaken our area gently at just about exactly the time she had wanted out! I'm absolutely convinced that she had felt it or sensed it, and wanted out of the house as a result! She has never acted that way any other time that I can recall.

Arthur C. Clarke wrote a story, based on this same idea, about a guy with a dog who saved him from a lunar quake by waking him before he felt it.
