The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsSometimes I wish I'd had a sibling 8-10 years older than me. Reason is, I love
early rock music (or should I say rock-n-roll?).
I'm familiar with it now, but very little do I actually remember from back then. Maybe a handful of songs.
See, if I'd had an older sibling, maybe s/he would've been buying those records, listening to those songs, and thereby
introduced me to early rock'n'roll.

(30,947 posts)I was a teenager in the '50s and remember every one of those songs. Since I am now 74, I guess all those singers are dead now. I know Elvis and Buddy Holley are.

Blue Suede Shoes and Summertime Blues. Yes.
Both Everly brothers and Jerry Lee are still with us.

(26,117 posts)My 6 older siblings were between 16 and 7 years older than me, and I picked up all kinds of cultural references from them that others in my age group didn't. I've always thought it was pretty cool.
...and I have a bunch of old 45s and albums that belonged to them. It's more 60s than 50s r&r, but it's still great stuff!

(54,370 posts)I remember them even though the sixties was my decade.
One of my proudest moments was when my local band was playing a gig somewhere in Northern Virginia. We were doing "Light My Fire," and I heard someone shout as they entered "For a moment I actually though you had gotten the Doors to play this event!" We actually did a fair rendition, although we were 3 years before our time. We scattered to the four winds in 1968, and then in 1970 a hit film came out with the name of our band (Clockwork Orange). Had we stuck together for two more years, we would have had name recognition no one could buy. But like all bands, we were already starting to be at each other's throats after a while, so it's probably just as well we parted.

(12,296 posts)Not sure the rest of having siblings that much older than me made it worth it, though.
I was basically treated more like the bald-headed cousin than the 'littlest sister' 99% of the time.

Some of his songs were OK...but he wasn't a mover and shaker, for sure.

(4,138 posts)I came of age musically in the mid 80s, and liked (and still do, mostly) a lot of the stuff that was in heavy rotation on MTV at the time - Prince, Talking Heads, Madonna, Billy Idol, etc. But by the end of the 80s, pop radio and MTV was playing absolute garbage, and while I was somewhat aware of all the great stuff going on in hip-hop and college/alternative radio at the time, I ended up developing a huge passion for both 60s-70s rock and classical music.
And luckily, CDs were still enough of a novelty that my parents still had hundreds of albums from their youth.
And yeah, older siblings can be big influences on musical taste. I had a girlfriend once that was totally uninterested in most popular music, but she absolutely loved Queen and KISS (who peaked a bit before our time) thanks to her older sister.
