It is just hard to use. So, now I have two operating systems I didn't like, the latest Apple for iPad and W 8 on my new laptop.

(149,791 posts)So why on earth did you buy it?
I'd heard enough bad things about it beforehand, so I very carefully did not buy a new laptop with it. I had to go online to do that, but I got what I wanted.
Sometimes you have to dig for choices, but they are usually out there...

(6,581 posts)Sooner or later you have to go with the current version.
Ok, it was a great deal at OM. Touchscreen which I now love.
You know, my dear, I just need to whine.

(100,139 posts)But the thing I can't stand is that it's made for tablets and it's used on a desktop PC. I reformatted my SSD on my desktop and trying to install Windows 8 was maddening. I gave up and reloaded Windows 7 instead.

(1,186 posts)That's what the geek squad dude told me recently. Don't know how reliable this advice is but, it sounds plausible to me.

(6,581 posts)Would it still support the touchscreen?

(20,176 posts)They're touting the pairing in this article on their website as Win7 being the first WinOS to full integrate touch and multitouch. You have to buy one of the non-basic Win7s though: Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate.

(6,261 posts)I think mine is called "startisback", and it costs only $5. With it, and with gadgets (free somewhere), you're back to Windows 7 and you never have to see that awful new interface again, not even at boot time.
I love my new laptop now.

(6,261 posts)The gadgets I got here. Microsoft discontinued gadgets for Windows 8 because they want us to use the new Windows 8 craplets instead. Which I refuse to do. I'm now looking for a way to kill any process associated with that new interface permanently, as it's wasting resources.

(42,002 posts)I'd had nothing but PCs and needed a new laptop back in summer. Windows 8 was just bloody unworkable. And unbeknownst to me the keyboard was malfunctioning but 8 was so crazy I didn't know which was which. I like my Macbook Air a lot, though I can't believe I have to convert my documents to .doc because no one can open Mac's Pages docs. Otherwise I'm good.

(32,100 posts)If you install Classic Shell, it'll not only give you the START button back, it can be set to boot right to the desktop. I rarely go to the "Metro" or whatever the the start screen is called.

(3,220 posts)I hate the Windows 8 interface with a passion. Does it give you the Windows 7 interface back?
I have Windows 7 on my gaming desktop, and I miss it so much when using my laptop.

(32,100 posts)Not sure if it give you the Win7 interface back, as I've never used it. I came straight from XP. I do know that you can get the Win7 version of the START button.
You can download it here: http://www.classicshell.net/
Or, here: http://download.cnet.com/Classic-Shell/3000-2072_4-75553853.html

(4,373 posts)from Fry's and it had the dreaded 8. The salesguy gave me the name of an app that made it look like Vista but it was slow and clunky. I had to take laptop in for a minor tweak a couple of weeks later and the guy at the repair desk said they had a program they could install for $20 (sorry, don't remember what they called it). Took them less than 5 minutes and I love it - I can make my system look like Vista, 7, or XP, and no major lag time.

(3,220 posts)What used to take one click now takes a couple, and you have to actually look for stuff. While that may seem insignificant, over time it gets fairly annoying. Also, applications are completely unorganized to the point of sheer annoyance when you aren't on the desktop. I haven't looked to see if there's a way to fix this, but even getting to notepad or calculator is extremely annoying.
Microsoft's fix of, "You can choose to boot to the desktop now" shows that they're totally clueless. That's not the problem. You can get to the desktop fairly easily. It's the other stuff that sucks.

I've left numerous complaints about it at the Windows website and blog. So far, they don't seem to have realized how hated they've become with this crap. I'm hoping to install Ubuntu and kiss Windows good-bye forever. When I bought my new computer a few months ago, they wouldn't sell me one with Windows 7, which I would have taken. I asked them to install Ubuntu side-by-side with Windows 8 but three different so-called expert technicians at the computer megastore where I bought it couldn't do it and said there was something in my version of Windows 8 that prevented Ubuntu going side-by-side (I would have to wipe everything out). After months, I still can't locate anything on Windows 8. Just to call up the control panel (or anything else) I have to type that into the internal search engine. Also, a word processing program did not come with the software and that apparently has to be bought extra, much to my surprise.

(7,720 posts)I kept his old one running for 8 years. No way was he going to suffer through Windows 8, they had to deinstall it. He also would not use Internet Explorer 9, it was too different than IE 8. I didn't blame him. He had no choice with his e-mail software however.
I actually long for the days of pre OS 10 Macintosh operating systems.
