USA Population Trivia: 16 States Have No Cities over 200,000 - 12 more have only one

This list applies to "city-limits" population, not "city-metro-area" population.

Extreme example of difference: Salt Lake City has 186,000 people but Salt Lake Metro has 1.1 million.

STATES with only one city over 200,000:

Alaska, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon

STATES with no cities over 200,000 but at least one over 100,000

Arkansas, Connecticut, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, N. Dakota, Rhode Island, S. Carolina, S. Dakota

STATES with no cities over 100,000 but at least one over 50,000

Delaware, Maine, West Virginia, Wyoming

STATE with no cities over 50,000

Vermont

BTW, my adopted home state, Nevada, has four cities over 200,000: Las Vegas, Henderson, Reno, and North Las Vegas

6. Hartford might be the most lopsided

in terms of city-size vs the metropolitan area population - the city is only 125k or so, not even in the top 100, but the metro area is 1.2 million and in the top 50 in the US. (For example, El Paso, TX is 665,000 for the city, but the metro area is only 820k)

Bridgeport is only about 16 square miles; that's over 9,000 people per square mile, and Hartford is only slightly less dense.

It's crowded, especially in lower Fairfield and New Haven Counties. The area a couple of miles from the coastline is pretty much continuous city or town all the way from Greenwich to East Haven, probably past that.

But I'm guessing Fort Wayne, South Bend, and Evansville add to the list of at least over 100k

it can't be by much. I thought in last census it was about 5,000 short.
But the area is @500,000

8. Nevada is probably the most extreme example of population being concentrated

in small spaces. You have a few decent-sized cities surrounded by thousands of square miles of emptiness.

9. Yeah, it threw me last election season when Nevada kept being described as the most urbanized state

But something like 95% of the state live in the Las Vegas and Reno metro areas.

10. Alaska, too

Anchorage has about 298,000 or so. Fairbanks and Juneau are both between 32,000 and 33,000. There are maybe 10 towns with populations between 1,000 and 10,000 and everybody else lives in little villages. The area of Alaska is 1/5 the size of the rest of the US. Anchorage is pretty foreign to the rest of the state.

For normal shopping. We have a great little coop here in Morgantown, a local pet store, but if I need certain services,it's to Piitsburgh I go! Luckily, I love Piitsburgh and it's a fun day trip. I also have to drive there for the airport.
