(8,217 posts)Thing is, I can't agree.
I got frustrated with a few Macs, and wanted to stomp on them a few times.
It just doesn't give me as much recourses for fixing when things go down.
God forbid you make the mistake of upgrading with a machine that can't handle it.
Not to mention that if you wipe out one and don't have the appropriate programs to install, it would slow down to a crawl.
Then looking for an iteration of a program that would still work on your old OS is a chore... Even if it is just an explorer, some sort of flash, or media player.
I mean, your mileage may vary, but that is my experience with three different Macs I've had to wipe and redo.
I could barely use one for even browsing, it slowed to a damn crawl.
Even if I placed an OS that was for it.
But of course, Macs want you to buy their shiny new stuff rather than getting an old one to work like new again.
If I were to deal with an older machine, and re-doing everything in it, I'd rather have a PC.

Full Disclosure: These are about computers/laptops that are at least 8 years of age.
I also have a problem with the Mac file system, though yes, I figured out quite a few of the keyboard short cuts.
ACK! I got in to a Mac vs PC thing... -runs-

My sister is a Mac buff, and she used to brag about her Mac would never get a virus.
Until she got a Mac virus.
I laughed my ass off.

it could result in symptoms that might resemble a virus. That was especially the case for pre-OSX systems, when deleting the wrong file in the System Folder would have messed up the entire system. It's happened to me a couple of times.
Also, with the OSX systems, it's always a good idea to "repair" permissions on a regular basis (like defragging a Windows system). If the permissions are not "repaired" regularly, it can cause the operating system to work slowly or do weird things (like keep asking for a password).

(21,847 posts)You have to buy new things, like upgrade the operating system, every year or two. My computer is four years old and Apple no longer supports the operating system, leaving it open to viruses and other problems.
I was very pleased with the Mac when I got it but less so as time went on. Not only is updating the Operating System every year or two an unnecessary expense IMO, it also causes a lot of disruption. Some old programs may no longer work because of the new OS.
