Anyone watching The Sound of Music: Live on NBC?

I would have never thought a network would have the guts to try to a live musical. The last one was in 1955.

But it is extremely good.

usually when the say live it means taped live, but the live in real time.

Julie has a better vocal quality for the part, and Carrie really falls down as an actress.

Audra McDonald was just blowing her out in the duets, showing where the really talent lies.

I read where it is done on a football sized soundstage.

Their acting isn't very good.

But the rest of the cast is decent and the kids are good.

It'd be harder to sell doing a primetime musical if it were just Broadway veterans, even if the quality would be better. But she's definitely the weak-link in the cast.

I do applaud NBC for taking the risk and doing a musical though.

I've heard that the production topped out at $9 million.

With all its flaws, and there were many, I loved it from start to finish.

This was the sappiest of all R&H musicals and it's still amazing.

Carrie Underwood's acting was what you would expect, but the amateurish direction and atrocious audio problems were inexcusable. Beth Miller has directed "live" TV, but demonstrated absolutely no ability beyond her Saturday Night Live experience. Her camera placement and live cutting decisions were student production quality. There are many TV directors who could have done much better; Gary Halvorsen (Live From the Met, Two and Half Men, etc.) for instance.

I also think that a live audience would have added immensely.

But I turned away after the first song - her voice was just abrasive to my ears. Too bad they didn't get a real musical actress/singer. It could have been very good.

The good news is there was a big audience. Maybe the networks will stop making reality crap and put on more theatrical productions.

I love the movie. This production is not remaining true to the original music score. There has been at least one extra song and the order of the original songs is wrong.

And nobody can sing like Julie Andrews--not even Julie Andrews, anymore.

But, this is a sweet production.

Too bad it seems to be mostly underwritten by Walmart ads. Ugh.
