(144 posts)As though any were needed.
I just read an article claiming that, though cats recognize their "owners" use of the cat's name 80% of the time, they only respond 10% of the time. No can't find the link at the moment.
I kept thinking of this factoid last night as I wandered about at midnight on this cold winter's night trying to find one of our cats who was out. After the usual fruitless calling for 2o minutes, he showed up at door ten minutes after I came back inside. I think he was simply playing his cards for the extra bonding, grooming, and tuna this netted him for being the prodigal.
Congratulations on being accepted by a nice cat!

(6,151 posts)but it's too much like a mosh pit to get involved very often.
Sometimes you'll see a bit of snark in here, but not often and nowhere near to that degree.

She knows whose name is whose.

(144 posts)However, cats do, eventually, come when you call. At least, they do most of the time. But certainly never immediately!
I did finally find the link to the article
http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs10071-013-0620-4
I read it at work where I had access - bad employee! - but the whole article is behind a paywall
Historically it is probably true that humans domesticated dogs (recent article in Science puts the date of current dog line between 18-32,000 years ago & in Europe), but that cats chose to cohabit with people and only around 10,000 years ago.
Dogs may well have helped us become truly human, but cats helped us to become civilized.
