Cat rescued from pool of grease in Santa Cruz

A cat was rescued from a potentially greasy death Friday morning after rescuers pulled the animal from inside a grease barrel behind a Santa Cruz restaurant.

About 9:15 a.m., an employee at the Hindquarter Bar and Grille checked the barrel used to hold grease and was face to face with the cat, said Todd Stosuy, field services manager for animal services. The employee told the manager, who called the Santa Cruz County Animal Services to rescue the stranded animal.

When Stosuy arrived to rescue the cat, the animal was alive but silent.

"He was sitting in the grease, just staring up at me," Stosuy said. "His eyes were extremely wide open just looking at me."
