DU Album of the Day: Whitney Houston's first album - "Whitney Houston"

Normally I'm a rock chick but today I felt we should pay tribute to the late Whitney Houston. Say what you will, Whitney had a very pure, very amazing voice and although I wasn't a fan of hers at first, I have grown to appreciate her music over time.

I think I was turned off at first by Ms Houston mainly because of the 2 girls that had the dorm room next to mine. The album came out while I was in College and these 2 girls played the album CONSTANTLY and with the bass way too heavy. So all we heard in our room was a heavy bass to all the songs - annoying as hell!

But to be honest, after a few years I learned to appreciate her voice. She was definately blessed with a great talent and really new how to belt out an emotional song.

The beginning of the end of her career was clear the day she married Bobby Brown. Girls, this should be a serious wake-up call that dating the 'bad boy' doesnt' always end happily ever after. But what really makes me sad is this woman made millions for the people who ran the studio and yet when she was broken down it doesn't seem like anyone tried their best to help get her life back on track.

The world lost a great talent. RIP Whitney Houston

She was one of the few singers who could actually sing it.

Great Grammy show last night in tribute to her. LL Cool J really nailed it with his introduction (and Springsteen's "We Take Care Of Our Own" kicked ass)

June, 1987, I was at work, and got a call that my sister and her husband had been in a very serious car accident in the wilds of the U.P. of Michigan -- one of those calls where we were they wouldn't say much, just that they had been sent by "Life Flight" helicopter to the largest hospital in the region in Traverse City, and that someone needed to get there right away.

Well, I was in the middle of what was obviously a very tense drive with a lot of things on my mind, and a new song I'd never heard before came on the radio - "I Wanna Dance With Somebody".

It was such a happy, upbeat song, it just made me feel better on the spot. And, I heard it several more times that night.

Long story short, it was kind of touch and go for a while with my BIL, since they were hit on the driver's side and he was driving, but both of them are ok today.

And, I'm always grateful for the little boost in my spirits that song gave me. It still makes me smile.

I hope Whitney's daughter can find that kind of peace some day.
