"H-a-p-p-y" or "H-a-double p-y?" I think it's a generational thing.

Boomer here, and I never spell with "double-p" or whatever.

My mother did, though. Your experience?

(Younger DU'ers might think I'm talking about Chaucerian English )

of the other English-speaking countries. I volunteer teaching English as a second language, and I sometimes encounter a student, not so old, who has been taught by a previous teacher to say "double (whatever)" instead of saying the letter twice.

my German friend is a couple years younger than me and she uses it when spelling her name out loud in various situations (border crossings, car rentals etc) - she has two sets of double letters in her last name, so she says "letter letter double-letter letter letter letter letter double-letter"

Not sure if that counts.
