The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsRIP Daisy. Our wee girl lost her fight yesterday.
Her heart finally gave out on her. What a sweet, gentle heart it was. She was eleven, and the vet told us last year that she wouldn't survive the summer. She never did listen if it didn't suit her. Sleep well, my good girl.
From a few years ago. That smile.

(1,520 posts)Daisy looks like a Maltese (although forgive me is she was a Bichon) one of the sweetest breeds I've ever encountered. Unfortunately, unlike most small breeds, they don't live that long.
We adopted a Maltese named Alec some years ago from a family that decided they had too many dogs. He instantly became our dog that night. It was like we'd always had him. He used to sleep with his head on my pillow. But he was my wife's dog first and foremost. She adored him and he adored her.
Around 11 his esophagus started to collapse and at the age of 12 it did collapse. He was in agony and couldn't even lie down. He just coughed continually. Sometime that long, long night he had a heart attack. We had to have him put to sleep.
We still miss him every day. He had an incredible personality. He would enter the room like Kramer from Seinfeld...coming in a rush and then skidding to a stop while looking at you expectantly. Expecting what I never knew, but you always knew he had come into the room.
I know your Daisy was special and precious. I'm glad you had the time with her that you had. And I'll grieve with you for your loss. I understand.

There is an Indian legend which says:
"when a human dies, there is a bridge they must cross to enter into heaven. At the head of this bridge awaits every animal the human encountered during their lifetime...
The animals, based upon what they know of this person, decide which humans may cross the bridge...and which are turned away"....

I have sometimes thought of the final cause of dogs having such short lives and I am quite satisfied it is in compassion to the human race; for if we suffer so much in losing a dog after an acquaintance of ten or twelve years, what would it be if they were to live double that time?"
