This is the worst winter we have had here that I can remember.

Temperatures have been well below average. Our forecast low for today is -9. It's only going to get up to 7 today. Forecast lows for next Monday and Tuesday are -16 and -13. We've also had more snow than average.

What really sucks about all that is that I work outside about two hours every day doing my duties as a trucker. It doesn't sound too bad, but work outside for a little bit when the temperature is around zero and it will really take the energy out of you. Driving in the snow and walking around on snow and ice make it all the more tiresome and dangerous. I did not sign up for any ice road trucker shit.

I have five layers of clothes on my upper body and three on my lower body.

I'm done complaining now. I just needed to get that out of my system.

But every time I complain, the REALLY old-timers whip out historical photos of winters when the bay froze over and you could walk out to the islands. So as bad as I think it is, they have photographic proof that it was once even colder.

It snow was awful but it was not as cold as the temps we are having now.

People were skiing down our main streets, there was hardly a sound anywhere. Took forever to shovel out. No place to put the stuff. The kids had a ball, we shovelers had back pains!

but I remember 1983 as being bad, too. The snow was not that bad, but we had -100 wind chills near the end of the year.

I am in Northern Illinois.

No thaws between thanksgiving and easter. Dad got me on the roof twice.

Fun story, dad and another turkey were doing shots in 79, both fell off the roof.

Thank god for drunks and soft snow.

At least through the '80s we always expected to have a couple of weeks in January when the temperature never got above zero. I distinctly remember trying to start my car in actual daytime temperatures of -25 or so (one time I actually swapped out a battery one morning when it was -30), and I also remember as a little kid we played outside in the snow when it was well below zero. The pattern was that it would be really cold for a few days, then it would warm up and snow, then it would get really cold again, and so forth all winter. But most people born after about 1980 probably don't remember having to deal with this kind of weather. Which is not to say that I like it this way.

... but even here in TX 1978 was worse, at least in terms of precip.

In terms of just temperature, this has to be a record winter here. I'm pretty bummed about it also, can't enjoy going outdoors when it is 20 degrees and 30 mph winds. Which I realize is quite mild compared to the north but there is a reason I live down here I HATE THE #$@%@# COLD!

In SF we've had temps in the upper 60's for the last 6 weeks. It's scary and unnatural. Now all we hear on the news is how we're gonna suffer this summer because there'll be a drought.

Crap. I have been loving our weather--until I read about you poor folks elsewhere and think about our coming dry conditions. Anyone who still doesn't believe in Climate Change should just go crawl back under that rock they came from!!!

I let all my faucets drip two weeks ago when the temperature hit 6 degrees. But a pipe still broke. Fortunately, my son was able to repair it. Then yesterday, my pipes froze again. I do not have any hot water, only cold. All the faucets are dripping now and I have my clothes drier on to warm the pipes under the house. It helped for a while today, but the hot water is not running and I have all the hot water faucets wide open, but no water is coming out. I hate to see what is going to happen when the pipes thaw out. I will probably have water spraying everywhere.

And the temperature is dropping below freezing again tonight. I would love to have a hot shower. I have had to heat water to take sponge baths.

Staying fueled up can help; coffee, peanuts, carbs. Used to work at a ski resort and the lift operators were out there 6 hours a day or so. Even half sick they were out in it because they needed the money. Food makes a difference. Chocolate, peanut M&Ms, french fries, anything.

and I have always wanted to say this: Keep on truckin'!

my dad would take us down to the river, where people would have ice boat races. This was in coastal New Jersey. There were blizzards annually.
