My neighbor grows catnip

on his patio in a pot, for his indoor cat. Today he walked outside and found three neighborhood cats rolling in the catnip, pot overturned, soil all over. Of course he did the logical thing... started yelling and cursing at the cats, who scattered (slowly and drunkenly), knocking over his tomato plants.

Now I don't know this guy at all except to smile and say hello - we are both new to the neighborhood - but I really had to wonder what goes through a person's head who plants catnip and is surprised that it attracts cats.

I grow some in the ground as well, to attract cats who keep the rabbits away. But I also grow it in hanging pots just to be sure there's some left over for my indoor cats. Catnip is a member of the mint family, so it does spread pretty easily and is hard to kill.
