The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI need a new website to monitor the news over the course of the day. Suggestions?
Until this morning, for the past 8 years I have had as my homepage msnbc, now www.nbcnews.com.
I liked the setup; in one quick scan I could not only see the major headlines, I could also peruse them
by category: us/world news, business news, entertainment, etc. The webpage had print that was
both easy to see (unlike CNN's microscopic print), and yet, required little scrolling to get all the
headlines. Because of this concise format, I was able at a glance to see what was going on in the stock market, etc. I would log in every morning, and in about 3 minutes, have a general feel for the news. Then I'd spend an hour or two reading the
stories I wanted to read. Then I'd check back in several times a day, and could quickly see which
stories I had already read because the text would be a different color for stories I'd read, so I could
scan even faster on return visits. Now they've turned the site into a big picture book, where my eyes
and brain feel almost forced to search for the text of stories, and it is organized by day, not by story
type.
So, I'll have to switch to another website for my home page. What is/are your favorites?

(38,958 posts)Aljazzera, BBC, NPR and perhaps the Christian Science Monitor. I also follow labor issue so I would suggest one called the Labor Tribune which is a local St. Louis publication but has links to stories around the nation.
Don't know if that helps but it's what I use.

(38,958 posts)and frankly I would skip CBS as well. My home page is Yahoo which provides me with local weather, stock information and such at a glance and some basic news but I am usually there just for a moment. If I want weather (and I do) I go to NOAA.gov and stocks I rarely check as I find the markets will be updated during my commute listening to NPR on the way home and BBC on the way to work. You might try your local stations or newspaper as well, they will probably do an okay job for the headlines and news at a glance as would the NY Times, LA Times and Washington Post. It's really just finding a general source, but another I use is my FB newsfeed which I have set up for political and labor news.

(7,699 posts)I don't like excessive chatter and commercials.
Our local newspaper is a joke, unfortunately. Yep I guess I'll go back to the NYT and the Post;
I used to read them daily while in school a few years ago (got my degree very late in life).
Thanks again!

(38,958 posts)would be the Daily Show & Colbert as I think they do more journalism than most of the major news organizations, certainly more than the big 3 networks.

(7,699 posts)when Oliver was the host. But a lot of the time I don't see them until days later on the DVR.

(10,575 posts)Justin Bieber and his father were extremely abusive to a flight attendant as their private jet flew from Canada to New Jersey on Friday, forcing her to take refuge in the cockpit, according to an official report obtained exclusively by NBC News.
According to multiple law enforcement sources, the leased, luxurious Gulfstream IV on which the 19-year-old Canadian pop star, his father and an entourage of 10 friends traveled was so full of marijuana smoke that the pilots were forced to wear oxygen masks.

(28,394 posts)That was my go-to site, too. I read it while eating lunch at my desk.... easy to navigate and I loved the weather. Maybe I will switch to one of our local TV stations news pages.
What a cryin' shame.
