The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI was blessed to be a guardian angel to a small beast today.
The circumstances are kind of amazing really.
Riding home on my bike today I see a little white rat on the road at the entrance to one of the subdivisions I pass.
First, I saw it. Poor thing seemed nearly frozen in fear.
Second, I had a couple hamsters as a kid and have handled other rodents. So I was not all that afraid of it. Cautious. Yes. Afraid. No.
I crouched down and it came right up to me and sniffed my pant leg. I went to pick it up and it did that rodent thing of just holding your skin with its teeth. "Let's not hurt each other." I understood that.
I was on a bike. But I had brought my water bottle home. In fact, I went to retrieve it from the break room. Many times I would have shrugged this off. I would have left it.
So I had something to put the small beastie in to ride the bike the rest of the way home.
Shoved a little fruit into the water bottle holes.
After some false starts and frustration and discontinued and new web site I found the local animal rescue phone number.
Turned out she was about 5 minutes from me.
She asked me if I wanted the water bottle back.
"I'm pretty sure I would not use it again."

(18,497 posts)She just texted me. It was a two month old male rat. She already had him checked by a vet and he also already is in his forever home.

(14,881 posts)It must have come from the one of the subdivision houses. I hope it wasn't dumped, but at least it was found by the right person.
