How many I encountered-- especially in the South (though undoubtedly true of many other areas and other "gunners')-- who thought nothing of shooting squirrels out of trees--not to eat, just for "fun". Recently my sister told me that included a long time female friend, a seemingly professional nurse, who used to leave a bb gun at the door, just for that purpose. She said she and her husband would sit outside and just shoot at whatever squirrel inadvertently happened on their property. I assume rabbits and other small mammals as well. I don't know about the cats and dogs, but....

I get hunting (when food is the outcome). I also get rodent control--where disease and crop damage become a major issue.

But just shooting them for "FUN"?

Sometimes I really hate the people I encounter.

My neighbor has 10 pecan trees, he begs me to come over and help him "lower his losses" from the varmints. In return I make him and his wife a big pot, 2 gallons, of squirrel and dumplings. Get to keep any extra for myself.

They are in their late 60's and divide the pot into individual meals. She makes jams and jelly for sale.

He takes his job of patrolling the yard VERY seriously - prime objective is to keep them OUT of the yard, and if possible, KILL them (that's a terrier for you).

Of course that will never be possible but he doesn't know it. They're up in the trees jumping and leaping, pausing occasionally to tease him relentlessly, barking at him from the branches.

If only he was a cat....

He hates squirrels like they are some spawn of the Devil. If I don't pay attention while walking him, it's a separated shoulder for me.

He also hates cats and thinks birds are flying treats. But that's another story.

You want your dog on your wall. You need your dog on that wall.
