(6,151 posts)Too much water with all sorts of hungry critters swimming around. Besides, ocean storms are the worst. I'll stay a landlubber in love with Capt. Nemo from afar. As for any young'uns who might read this, nobody was ever more tempting than James Mason! Not ever since, not even Johnny Depp or anybody.

(6,151 posts)his Captain Nemo days. I always wondered if that character didn't begin the Radicalization of IA. The story was rather forward looking for its time. Just the beard was enough to make me swoon, and the environmental activism only added to his charm. I always considered him the hero of the piece.
Even in his later years I could appreciate Mason's talent and voice. And yes, his looks did last longer than most.

(6,151 posts)We lived in NYC for 2 years; my ex was stationed at a tiny little office called the Army Pictorial Center, in Manhattan if memory serves. We ran all over NY those 2 years, knowing we wouldn't be there long and probably wouldn't ever return. Next stop was White Sands Missile Range. He was Signal Corp and usually his tours were rather short, since his basic function was to travel to a base and get the Signal Corp office up to par before moving on to the next one. Seldom longer than 6 months. From bits and pieces of his conversations with drinking buddies, I always thought he really worked on intelligence. It's amazing what people will let drop under 'safe' conditions when they're well lubricated.

(6,151 posts)Our house was on the base perimeter so we had an unobstructed view of the mountains. Both of us would take our evening drink or dessert out on the back patio and watch tremendous lightning storms. Still the best show on earth. The closer the strikes, the better we liked it. Of course we had the invincible attitude of the young then. Probably not enough sense between the two of us to power a triple A battery.

(6,151 posts)I've always felt Navy pilots were the greatest in the world. Even better than Air Force. How many people can land a screaming jet on a pitching, rolling deck? Awesome.
