(15,774 posts)with a year's worth of food and supplies but when a storm or hurricane is coming in I make sure I have gas in the tank, kitty litter, dog food, cat food, toilet paper, cash, candles, lamp oil, batteries, fuel for me, and knitting. Yeah, I love for things to be shut down. I view it as needed down time.

(17,193 posts)I keep reserves on hand of most stuff. Where I live, there has never yet been a storm that made going to the stores impossible for a long enough time to worry.

(21,020 posts)we're usually pretty well stocked up on nearly everything.
So the only thing I really stockpile, if it can be called that, is electricity...on my devices. I make sure my cellphone, iPad, and Kindle are charged.
Those, plus my knitting...I'm good to go.
Ron Obvious
(6,261 posts)So no need to stockpile anything. Three Xantrax batteries can power the On Demand water heater for hot showers for days to come, so we need to make sure they keep charged.
ETA: left a word off.

We have a hurricane pantry at all times, so are normally well stocked.

(32,080 posts)Specifically AA and AAA. The last time we had an ice storm, I went and got a bunch of C and D batteries for the boom box and flash lights. Never used them. Just tossed most of them because they were leaking. Fortunately, the lantern batteries were still good, as the ones in my lantern were about dead. I also bought a couple of those tap lights. But, they take AAs, and I don't have enough of them. Oh well. I'll be okay if I lose power again short-term. My little LED flashlight takes AAAs. It puts out as much light as the big lantern. I hope the one in it now will get me through for now.
Moondog
(4,833 posts)post storm, keep in mind that there are adapters out there that take AAs and let you use them in C and D cell applications. Essentially they are hollow plastic cylinders that hold an AA inside. You can use rechargeables or alkalines in them. So, with a set of adapters, all you really need to stock are AAs and maybe AAAs.
GoCubsGo
(32,080 posts)I don't use C and D cells all that often, but I usually have AAs and AAAs on hand--except for now. Doh!

Now I've a toddler and I'm researching alternatives for our hurricane kit this year.

(28,941 posts)That's for a short siege
For anything extended - propane stove, two generators with a stock of 50 gallons of gas. Canned and dried food, two pound can of ground coffee, about 10 gallons of drinking water.
Power outages are a way of life here. All it takes is an old tree giving up the ghost or a suicidal squirrel.

(32,080 posts)I just heat up whatever is in my refrigerator in the fireplace. I had soup tonight, heated in my camping mess kit. Had I waited a half an hour, I could have warmed it in the microwave instead. Sometimes it pays to tempt fate.

(55,007 posts)plus we are 20 miles from town anyway. most of our "shortage disasters" have to do with water, so there are times we stock up on water. a year and a half ago we had the gas shut off when it was finally determined that our lines were leaking BADLY between the meter and the house (about 200 yards worth of digging involved in that project) since we are rural ag we were allowed to fix the problem ourselves. did it for about 500 vs the 7000 the only plumber licensed for gas within 60 miles wanted. but it took over a month.
used a camp stove, crock pot, microwave and an ancient electric frying pan to get by. the husband even figured out how to make peanut butter cookies in the frying pan.
thank dog the weather was warm still and we were fine showering with cool water.

(8,646 posts)and having 5 females in the house means I never have less than a month's supply of TP on hand.....BUT...if I knew there was going to be a storm where I'd be cut off and out of power for a few days or more (has never happened here...the longest power outage was when I was a kid we had a strong F4 tornado pass within a half mile of our house...power was out 12 hours) I'd pick up some batteries and booze. The batteries for my gas fireplace (the ignition has to have battery power when power is out) and the booze for entertainment. I have one of those emergency radio/cell phone charger things so I'd be okay for internet and phone

(15 posts)This weekend was what I HOPE to be the last "big storm" of this winter. My clients were talking about it all week (Drama, you know). Along about, T-1, I thought, "Hmm, maybe I should actually pay attention?" So, charged up cellphone and stuff, and got out the oil lamp, found all the flashlights, got some alternate heat lined up, etc. Like everyone else said, if you run out of catfood, you're screwed. I can make the dogs an MRE burrito, and they are HAPPY. The cat? She'll chew my arm off.
