The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI think we should have a lounge curling team.
Looks likes a sport most of us could handle.
It would take some practice but we could do it.

(130,905 posts)and finally checked.
Sweeping cause a slight covering of water to form on the ice, and allows the stone to slide more easily. It the same basic principle that makes ice skates work.

The ice is sprayed with water to make it uneven. Sweeping removes the bumps and allows for adjustments to speed and distance

(18,705 posts)I bet it takes a lot of practice to sweep just right.

(6,278 posts)Curlers know the phenomena - sweeping does make the stones travel as much as 10-15 feet farther. But as for the "curl" part of "curling," there are conflicting explanations. Canadian physicists tell a story based on the front of the stone being better lubricated thanks to something like the melt effect mentioned above, but a Swedish team says that's all wrong and microscopic scratches on the running surface are responsible.

(112,177 posts)I practice curling the water pipe and the beer bottles from the table to my lips on a frequent schedule.

(18,705 posts)Of course we would have to have special cats for this.
My cat would just look at us funny.
TexasTowelie

(18,705 posts)Might work.
The cat would have to stay on the stone to win.

(112,177 posts)I toke kare of dat n da pregaim sesshun. (Nuthing lik LOLCatese!)
I am concerned that he might ralph up something though when the stone starts rotating.
I know that in figure skating the skater gets a point deduction if they lose a feather on the ice during competition. What are the rules if they find cat hair on the curling ice?
texanwitch
(18,705 posts)Whats a little cat hair.
No long hair cats.

How much snow did you get from the last storm? We did not get hit here, but ended up getting 5-6" of fluff last night. We might get 1-2" overnight.

(64,933 posts)1-3" at a time. I think the most is 6" once. But it has been so freaking cold that it has not melted. It's about a foot deep and we have not seen the "lawn" since the first of the year.
Thankfully it is supposed to be in the 40's and 50's later this week.
