Goa pics thread 2: beaches and churches (dial-up warning)

So after the food porn thread down the page, I wanted to give you snowed-in folks some reminder of what nice weather actually looks like, in case the memories are too faded.

Here are a few views of the beach and pool at the hotel:

We didn't want to pay for an ocean view room, so we got a garden view room instead, which was also really cool:

Right off the hotel grounds is Miramar Beach, one of Goa's more famous ones:

There's an advertisement for the upcoming Lusifon games (sort of like an Olympics for Portuguese speaking countries or regions)

Also, ever since I worked at a naval engineering firm I really love ships, and there were some cool ones:

On the beach was an amazing sand sculpture:

On Sunday we rented a car and drove to Old Goa, the Portuguese colonial area.

Up in the neighborhood of Altiho (sort of on the way there) you can see the Governor of Goa's house:

As well as the Archbishop's residence (I think it's also a school):

Next, the Basilica of Bom Jesu, built in 1594, where the remains of Francis Xavier are held:

Then the Church of St. Francis (Assisi, not Xavier), built in 1661:

Then we went up a mountain. From the top you could see Se Cathedral (1619) and St. Francis' church again:

At the very top was the chapel of Our Lady of the Mountain (1551, only recently restored). Alfonso de Albequerque had it built to celebrate his conquest of Goa:

And, finally, on the reverse slope were the ruins of the Church of St. Augustine (1512).

Pretty cool trip.

It was eaten by Portuguese sailors (the vinegar and chilies help preserve it) and took root among the locals.
