Seriously though, what kind of cover band doesn't play the band's biggest hit?

I mentioned it in the First World Problems thread but it's still bugging me. I know it's not the end of the world as we know it (Good thing they weren't an REM cover band - probably woulda skipped that too).

But damn, Thin Lizzy Cover band. You started off with Jailbreak and then played 40 minutes of shit I never heard before. Which I patiently sat through because I figured there would be a Boys Are Back In Town payoff.

I don't care how many craft beers this shit-hole dive bar had on draft, they weren't enough to make up for that glaring omission.

And my wife is mad you didn't play Whisky from the Jar too.


And don't even get me started on the CCR cover band with the singer reading the lyrics badly off notebook paper and still getting them wrong.

cover bands play the lesser known songs so that nobody will know how much they really suck.

I mean, if nobody's ever heard the real band's not so great songs, there's nothing to compare the cover band's ability to.

Or something like that. I guess.

they as much as admitted they had just learned most of these songs in the last few weeks. I mean, they were capable musicians for sure but come onnnnnnn....The only reason people go see cover bands is to see covers of the hits! 1 out of 3 ain't enough! If I knew for more than a month there was gonna be a cover band night then surely they knew it too?

It was a weird night all around - the other cover bands were the Stooges, Kiss and CCR. The Stooges were the only ones that seemed like they were prepared for the gig and it kind of irritates me I had to pay a cover to get in if 3 of the four bands were just basically joking around.

My wife saw the Thin Lizzy drummer and asked him why he didn't play Whisky or Boys are Back In Town and he said they forgot about Whisky but didn't want to be so "obvious" as to play Boys...Ummm, no dude, that was your one real job. You had ONE job...


And the sound in the place sucked. So muddy. It made me worry for another show I have tickets to next month - an obscure French death metal band and some others were supposed to play but now today I found out the tour is cancelled so I guess that's OK. I'll get a refund and then probably never go back to this pub again.

Had they even just advertised the covers as local bands attempting to play other band music I might not have minded so much - but when it's advertised as cover bands playing it creates an expectation that they are actually trying to recreate the band they are emulating.

Also next month I'm going to see Get The Led Out - a fantastic Led Zep cover band that work full time at creating the bombastic atmosphere of a Led Zep show - I've seen them twice before and will go every time I can get near them as they just do it right.

Dear other cover bands, please go to a GTLO show and learn to music.

7. I'm no Thin Lizzy historian

but I love 3 of their songs. I went to a club to see what was advertised as a Thin Lizzy cover band and I guess I expected them to play at least those 3 songs. I think all three of them were hits so they could have played those three songs and still had plenty of room to show us what else TL had done.

But I guess if that's the worst thing that happened to me all weekend I'm in a lot better shape than a lot of other folks. I did have some fantastic Cajun food at a place near the venue before the show. THAT place is going on my permanent mental list of places to eat.

like I said, I recognized none of the other songs they played although my wife did recognize Rosalie or something like that. They did say the name of many of the songs they played - I think to remind each other what they were playing more than for telling us in the audience what they were playing - and I don't remember them saying that but it's possible still.

I'll go youtube Hollywood and see if I remember it...

There could be any number of reasons why they skipped a song. Sounds as if they didn't have time to rehearse, or someone in the band couldn't hang.

Cover bands are fun, but playing originals is better. Hopefully your music catches on and nobody knows that you fucked it up

Of people really like that song because they still play it all the time on the oldie station. Having said that, you are absolutely right, the ONLY reason to see a cover band is because of their hits. And, it seems like TL 's only really big hit was The Boys song (I guess a couple of other songs people know but since I'm not a fan, I don't even know about those). In any case, I agree, there is NO excuse for not playing the big hit. What a bunch o douche bags!
