Horses and the Boer War

In the Boer War the British Army removed provision of care for animals from the war establishment. The British Army went to South Africa without proper veterinary provision. There was a rapid spread of glanders, epizootic lymphangitis, and mange. 326,000 horses and 51,000 mules were lost with hardly any lost to enemy action.
