From the Newcastle Courant 1783

March 15, 1783: "Tuesday se'nnight, being Shrovetide, as a person was amusing himself along with several others, with the barbarous custom of throwing at a cock, at Howden Clough near Bristol, the stick pitched upon the head of Jonathon Speight, a youth of about 13 years of age, and killed him on the spot."
