Another Barbaric Thing to do with Cocks
In northern, pre-industrial England, it was no unusual diversion to tie a rope across the street about 10 feet in height and tie a cock to it by it's feet. Youths ride by on horseback, full speed and rise in their stirrups to the catch the cock's head which has been soaped to add to the difficulty. Whomever keeps his seat and bears away the head is the winner.
