OK, part of this is difficult for me, but some other things will flow from however this turns out.
I still haven't set a date for a meet-up/memorial but I did finally hear back from the person at UMC about a possible gift to the nurses and other care-givers up on the 4th floor. She told me they could use a new television for the breakroom. Now I personally don't care much for teevee, but this is actually almost a perfect item to be his "gift" to them.
Now, the hard part - there had been some discussion about DUers participating in this. I can probably swing something - she said nothing too large, and I know these things have gotten pretty inexpensive anyway but...are any of you interested? I do not know how to set this up or what else might need to be done...but...
If this DOES become more of a DU thing, I really want to have us work on some kind of "dedication" letter. I would like to have input for that much more than the money, really. I need some feedback on that. What do you think?
Ironically, he had just purchased a new large (to me???) screen for himself before his last hospitalization. I left it with his landlady as a sort of inheritance since she was kind to him and she did need to find a new tenant right away. So gifting televisions is what I am apparently doing in Jim's memory. Maybe I can add a dvd player and find some of the old shows he liked. I also know there are lots of posts on movies he liked that can be found by searching DU so if there was enough response to this that is something extra we might do.
Thanks for any input here, and sorry to be so long in getting around to this.

(55,025 posts)but I am not sure if people would be comfortable sending checks.
I don't know how to set up paypal or anything like that (or if it would be needed)
does anybody know if there is a way to chose an item - say through amazon or something like that, and then let multiple people pay for it?

Something like that.

(17,240 posts)There's some way to set up a fund, but I don't know how it's done.
Big flat screen TVs are actually not so pricy these days, Best Buy has 40" HDTV units at $300.
DUer OneGrassRoot might know how to set up a shared funding deal.

(55,025 posts)I haven't seen her in a long time.
I am not positive if Best Buy still has a Tucson store but I am sure there is something or we could order on line. I should probably ask my kids about what they have and where they got them LOL.

(68,644 posts)If you're willing to use your own PayPal account, that's free.
Or, create a new PayPal account if (like me) your current one is associated with your personal email account.
Or, use a site like GoFundMe, but they take a chunk.
The chunk taken might be worth the piece of mind.

(55,025 posts)I forgot the password, of course, so went through the proceedure to reset that and got to the new log-in page and it decided it wanted my answers to security questions. Well, hell that was YEARS ago and I never use the account so I tried a couple of answers, but there were so many possibilities it finally asked if I wanted to open a new account and so I started that but it kept going in circles to saying I already had an account.
I e-mailed the help address but who knows what will happen. GoFundMe looks easy but they want almost 10% - that seems kind of a lot to me, but then I am a cheapskate so I guess we could do it. I hate to bother OGR, I know how hard dealing with so much real need is and honestly even this is kind of making me feel weird and it is for a pretty good cause.
I guess I will see if I hear back from paypal, then go from there.
I'm sure she won't mind this:
In our exchanges, OGR wrote:
"And about the importance of a need...I have never, ever, ever intended Wishadoo! to be all about dire, critical needs. I want the whole spectrum involved, including uplifting wishes and dreams, to balance the suffering all around, if that makes sense. And honoring those who have passed is wonderful. So this is completely appropriate and in alignment with Wishadoo."
So don't feel bad. The problem is that using my PayPal would reveal my regular real life email address to anyone donating, same for you.
Perhaps one of us should create a new PayPal with a new throwaway email address?

(55,025 posts)I want to call this the MFM Tag-Team Bed-Bath Memorial Thank You Television and make some kind of funny letter/certificate with his picture and some words explaining it all.
...let me think on that a bit.
I have the car taken care of, so I'll be able to pitch in a bit this weekend.
I'm going to send you my email address. If you have a few good pics of him, please send them. Also, any ideas on what you think it should say.
I'm thinking...
I still get tears in my eyes thinking about him. I wish I could have made the trip down to meet him in person.

(20,219 posts)that's a nice idea!
get a plaque and attach it to the tv
I like rurallib's dedication:
"Jim had friends throughout the country and the world through his gentle humor on Dem Under"
variation?----"Jim was loved by friends across the country and throughout the world for his embracing kindness and hilarious humor on the popular website, "Democratic Underground"."

(55,025 posts)I think I have this thing set up. If you want to try sending through paypal (no account needed) click HERE.
If you do not have an account or don't want to use it you can go to the link at the lower left of the page with the little credit card logos that says "continue."
I think they keep a fee but it isn't as much as the other funding site, maybe a couple %.

(33,044 posts)I think we are good to go now. Thank you all so much. An anonymous DUer has offered to look for a good deal from their work, and Wait Wut is maybe working on a "document" to present to the UMC 4th floor staff.
Does anybody else have any recommendations for brand or accessories? (I don't know what you need these days, there is wifi at the hospital - do TVs regularly connect now?) should we get a DVD player to go with it? I know those are pretty cheap and I think we can cover one - do breaks last that long?
I know some of the shows and movies he liked, and searching from his replies to those kinds of topics here in the Lounge brings up lots of possibilities...any of you in Nursing or similar work at hospitals have any suggestions?
I hope it is more relaxing in a break room than the vast majority of places I have endured televisions like in waiting rooms - ugh. Fox or other cable news all the time.
I would like to get this done and at least ordered by the middle of the week so I can let them know it is coming. I assume they have to have maintenance install, but I will check and see if maybe I need to hire somebody. That might make a difference for where to purchase too, I suppose. Ok that will be my Monday morning phone call.
What else?
