"The Polish Prince" -- Bobby Vinton. All these years, I never appreciated him much.

Thought his songs were sappy and all that. And maybe they are, but did you ever hear a song you've heard hundreds of times before and all of a sudden it grabs you?

Another thing, I noticed he sings every word clearly and distinctly. For someone who listens to lyrics, that means a lot.

My grandma used to sing this all the time. (I think it's spelled moja droga ja Ciê kocham -- my dear I love you, -- but I could be wrong.)

but I was never into his music. I was 12 when his first hit came out, Roses Are Red, My Love. I bought that record but then I bought a lot of records when I was hitting puberty in 1962, from jazz pianist Bill Evans to violin virtuoso Jascha Heifetz. It was kind of an interesting time, nearing the end of the doo wop era and awaiting the Beatles, with clean-cut slick-haired teen idol crooners like Dion, Fabian, Vinton, Sedaka, Ricky Nelson and others as well as the emergence of the folk music craze with Bob Dylan just getting noticed. It was such a different time. The songs seem so innocent now.

I had a similar "was this song always this good?" moment when I first listened to my CD of Bacharach songs.

with some of The Carpenters' songs. I didn't like them much at all when they were popular in the '70s. Too sappy and commercial for me then. Then I was listening to a program about them on NPR and gained a new appreciation for some of their songs, Superstar, for one. Also, I never cared much for Barry Manilow, but I love this song, I Am Your Child. The words are just beautiful and the melody is great too:

Forgot to add this earlier, I'll have to check out Bobby Vinton's music. He has a nice voice. Thanks for the recommendation.
