The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI found a couple of Morel Mushrooms!
I was out walking my dog and sat down to retie my shoe and I see this two inch morel. I've never seen one in real life before. I had never even heard of them until I saw people on DU talking about them last Spring. I looked around and saw another tiny one, about an inch long on the other side of the fence. It's so cold out I didn't look around for more but it'll be warmer towards the end of the week.
Anyone else find any yet?

But seriously, that's cool!
Yeah, I was excited to actually see one. I didn't pick them because they're so small, but when I got home I googled them and apparently that's the size they're supposed to be. They're so tiny and with the leaf mulch they blend right in. I 'm hoping once it's warms up I'll find some more.

(115,683 posts)They typically grow on decaying wood, especially elm. I had some dead hackberry branches in that part of the yard, and hackberry is an elm relative. Hoping for more this year.
I fried them in butter and ate them. They were excellent.

I went and got mine after dinner tonight. I looked around for some more but had no luck. I came home and sauteed them in butter and threw a piece of crusty french bread in the same pan, toasted it all up and put the mushrooms on top with a little parmesan.
Wow, so good. I want more.

(4,465 posts)I have been noticing large, men's shoe prints on the trails lately. Usually it's just me and one other woman and then the kids in the neighborhood that go back there. I wonder if someone has been back there hunting morels...lol. I think I may have found someone else's spot.

(29,414 posts)My confidence in hunting for edible mushrooms is pretty low, so I'll leave it to the experts and enthusiasts that are still alive

(4,465 posts)I knew immediately it was a morel. But if you're not sure, then the experts tell you to slice them in half; if they are hollow they're morels.
