Good Man's Croft

In 1594 the Elders of the Scottish Church abolished an irrational custom of the farmers to allow a portion of their land untilled every year. This spot was supposed to be dedicated to Satan, and sometimes called The Landlord's Acre. It may have been in actuality a practice that arose from early farmers learning the benefit of crop rotation, but then as now, allowance for the preservation of the earth, respect for nature, was not tolerated by religious or political power.
