Chrysler To Sell 707 HP Dodge Challenger

Chrysler Group is taking muscle cars to steroid-crazed levels with its new V8 engine. The Dodge Challenger SRT with the optional Hellcat engine, available starting in the fall, will put out a total of 707 horsepower.

This will be "the most powerful muscle car ever," according to Chrysler.

The Challenger SRT Hellcat will have an eight speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual. It will be competing against cars like General Motors (GM)' Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 with its 580 horsepower V8 and the 662 horsepower Ford (F) Shelby GT500 which recently went out of production. A Ford spokesman wouldn't comment on its competitors car, but a new Shelby GT500 with, potentially, more power is expected to be revealed some time soon.

A General Motors spokesman indicated that that automaker has no plans to try to approach the Hellcat's horsepower output, at least in a Camaro. GM has already unveiled a version of the Corvette two-seat sports car, the Z06, with a 650 horsepower engine.

I love muscle cars. Even own a few of 'em. But at some point the whole thing just gets silly.

Hell, why not go for 4 digits?

I can't believe I'm saying I think this is just a bit much myself, being a dyed in the wool gearhead and fan of Detroit muscle, but mostly the older stuff.

To me, my "fast" is adequately satisfied on the street by a 13 or 14 second car. There's just no way you can enjoy a car like that on the street without ending up with the local constabulary's baton up your ass and a night in crowbar motel.

I had a drive in my nephew's Mercedes diesel inline 4 cylinder coupe
and it was very fast and way more economical. They're doing amazing things with diesel cars in europe.

My favorite car. The memories... Many a good time was had. Couldn't ride in one now though. Without the ubiquitous Frampton 8-track it wouldn't be the same.

He damn near went under when they went bankrupt and were bought out by Daimler-Benz.
Then again when Cerberus bought them.
Took out a second mortgage on his home.
Sold a condo on the beach they had.

Yeah, poor guy, but they are a nice couple.
We're surrogate grandparents to their two little girls.

Since Fiat bough the company they seem to be thriving.
Just put in a very nice pool.

I'll have to kid him about the new monster car.

I drive a lugger truck with a 350hp motor in it. It is kind of slow, but it get's the job done and I'm frequently grossing 60,000 pounds. To my knowledge, they haven't put anything bigger than 600hp in a semi from the factory. Those rigs are capable of pulling mountain grades grossing 80,000 pounds while maintaining highway speeds.
