The Paris Plague

Parisians book their holidays to run away from the city at this time of the year, because it's truly the biggest month for tourists. Next time you go, September/October is the best time for all European countries.

Also: the French, being civilized, have a museum card you can buy which gets you to the front of the queues. It's called Le Carte. Can be bought online. Here:

That said, I hope you loved it! Paris' popularity is well-earned, it's a magical place! Be careful, though, it gets in your blood. You're gonna have to go back, no avoiding it!

6. My dad spent a year at Sonderstrom Air Force Base in Greenland

in the 1950s, north of the arctic circle. He brought back photos of polar bears that would come right up to the barracks looking for food. He also brought back some interesting fossils of prehistoric fish he dug out of a clay bank and sent to a professor who said some included new species.

One night my mom and dad were invited to a dance in the officer's club when he was stationed in Oklahoma and I was three years old. My dad danced one dance with the General's wife and made an off-hand comment about her children. My dad didn't know this was a very touchy subject with the General's wife because she couldn't have any. Anyway, she vowed to fix his wagon and wouldn't accept his apology. She had her husband immediately transfer my dad and his family (me and my mom) to the middle of nowhere, Johnson Atoll Air Force Base in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. When she found out that my dad was happy to go there, where he could have his own boat and teach me to fish she had her husband the General tear up the transfer papers and reassign my dad to serve one year in Greenland, where he couldn't bring his family. My dad couldn't get over how petty and vindictive this woman was and how important officer's wives were in the power structure of the Air Force. My mom might have been partly to blame. She refused to go to the required ass-kissing get togethers of military wives designed to keep officers and their wives in line. Needless to say, knowing these things really soured me for life on the possibility of following in his footsteps for a military career.
