But it's educational! I'd have never heard of the sinking of that ship were it not for Gordon Lightfoot. To this day, it still gives me goosebumps. Now that's a songwriter!!

6. Very educational .... ballads are a way of teaching folks (especially kids)

about other people and situations they haven't experienced, and may never experience personally, helping to develop empathy.

Does anyone know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
If they'd put fifteen more miles behind her
They might have split up or they might have capsized
They may have broke deep and took water
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters

I'm guessing a lot of Republicans weren't fans of ballads when they were kids, or they never paid much attention to or thought about the words.

I found out that's because it's on the 1969 Sunday Concert album, which is just about the only one I don't have. Apparently it contains a number of songs that he never included on other albums. But now I have it on order, along with "Harlan County USA" and another obscure Martin Sheen movie I found super cheap on amazon. ; )
